I have previously used front mudguards that attach to the frame. Since corners are often turned when cycling, I instead opted for one that attaches to the wheel itself so that I was protected when not going in a straight line. It was very easy to attach, taking about 10 minutes to unpack, attach and get it properly aligned. It's very good at preventing spray off a wet road hitting your legs, ensuring you stay dry when cycling after a recent shower. The only slight downside is that if you lean the bike against something, the mud guard can bend and take a bit of bending in the other direction to re-align it with the wheel.

Easy to fit and remove/clean. Comes with an Allen key and various size expanding cylinder fixings to secure the adapter into the bottom of the steering post. Once in place simply slide/clip the mudguard onto the adapter. Quick and easy. fitted to an adult mountain bike with 26" wheels.

The Ledge
For me, this attachment method, the screw-in bracket under the steering head, is the only one that works on an MTB. This mudguard feels solid and bounces and clatters far less than others I've used and the splatter factor is as good as you can reasonably expect from this kind of mudguard. However, this is the second replacement I've bought and at 58 I don't consider myself to be any kind of hard core rider. The plastic step on the mudguard which slides into the attachment under the head is just too thin and snaps when it's given 'a bit of a knock'. However despite this design flaw it is still the best I've tried, and at least when I replace them they just clip straight into the old fitting.
