If you continue to ride on metalled roads throughout the British winter or off-road on a Mountain Bike or Gravel Bike you are bound to encounter mud and water at some point. So many bikes these days don’t come complete with mudguards; or even mudguard eyelets to allow attachment. The solution is a system which attaches to the bike as an aftermarket product, which is exactly what this pair of Byking™ Bike Mudguards offered for review under the Amazon Vine programme are designed to do. Whilst they won’t offer the level of protection a full mudguard does, they offer some protection from the worst of the splashes which can soon dirty clothing and, probably more importantly, wear out bike components which can be expensive particularly if not rigorously cleaned after a filthy ride. They are wide enough to cover Mountain Bike tyres but I’m using them for my Gravel bike, which has similar width tyres. I practice however they will work with any wheel size between 24"-29" on any bike that has sufficient positions to attach. The rear mudguard attached to the seat post with a bracket, and a thumbscrew ensures the correct tightness. The front mudguard is a little more complex, but a helpful video in the product information shows that you push an adapter up the crown after removing the front wheel and turning the bike upside down, with the front and rear parts of the mudguard separately attached. I found this a little fiddly, and it is my only reason for deducting a star. They are an extremely flexible combination of Polypropylene and carbon fibre, which if you travel off road you will know an ability to flex when encountering bumps is pretty essential. It’s hard to find fault for £9.99 and they do help keep the worst of the weather off. Picture shows the product as received and before installation to my gravel bike.
